January 29, 2012

Math
Last week, we finished fractions. Students will get back their tests on Monday. This week, we are working on decimals.

Reading
We are finishing up a read-aloud called The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry. The kids are getting quite a kick out of it! It's very funny. We are continuing to work on non-fiction. Last week, students made storyboards, which came out great. This week, we will start our next set of book groups. These assignments will take the place of reading letters for the next few weeks.

Writing
Students finished editing and are typing the final drafts of their feature articles. These are coming out great!

Science
We are continuing the floating and sinking unit.

Social Studies
We are finishing up the explorers unit. Students will have a quiz on explorers on Wednesday. Last Friday, Jeff Bennett was back for his second presentation on the Dutch settlement of New York.

Math
We are finishing up fractions this week and will have a test on Thursday. I will send home a review packet on Wednesday. Our next unit is decimals.


Reading
We have started a new read-aloud called The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry. The class really enjoyed Island of the Blue Dolphins and had some great insight and ideas! This week, we will not be doing reading letters. Instead, students will be working on a Reading Story Board. They can choose any recent book they have read. Directions will come home on Monday and story boards will be due on Friday.

Writing
We are drafting feature articles. I will be meeting with students throughout the week for editing and revising and we will begin typing. These are looking great so far!!


Science/Social Studies
We are continuing the floating and sinking unit in science and the explorers in social studies.

Math
This week, we are continuing the fractions unit. We have been working on finding equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. This week, we will continue doing this and will be comparing and ordering fractions and we will start adding and subtracting fractions.

Reading
This week, we are continuing independent reading. We will also be working in small independent reading groups over the next few weeks. I will focus these small groups on nonfiction reading. Starting this week, there will be a graduate student from Saint Rose working in our classroom on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. He will be focusing his work on reading and writing and facilitating small groups. It is a great opportunity for more one on one attention for students!

Writing
We are continuing to work on feature articles. Students should have research done  by Tuesday and we will start drafting on Wednesday.

Social Studies
We started a unit on Explorers. We will focus on European explorers who explored the New York area. The explorers we will study in this unit are Henry Hudson, Jacques Cartier, John Cabot, Giovanni Verrazzano and Samuel de Champlain.

Science
We are working on the floating and sinking unit.. This week, we will make clay boats. The students are really enjoying this unit!

Monday, January 16th-No School

Math
This week, we will be starting fractions. We will start with halves, quarters, eigths and sixteenths.

Reading
We are working on a non-fiction unit. We have been reading a variety of non-fiction articles and identifying the conventions of non-fiction such as captions, bold print, italics, table of contents, index, etc. Students should continue reading an independent book of their choice and writing weekly letters.

Writing
We have learned all about feature articles and now we will start writing! Students will decide on topics this week and begin researching. They will need to interview one or two people on their topic. This can be a parent, friend, family member, teacher or maybe even an expert in the area they are researching. We will work on research skills this week and will work on rough drafts next week.

Science
We are starting the floating and sinking unit. Students need 5 small objects to test on Monday. These objects should not be larger than their hand and can go underwater!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and spent time with family and friends.

Math
In Math this week, we will be working on using multiplication and division facts in algebra. Next week, we will begin a unit on fractions.

Reading
We started a new read aloud book called Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. It is a Newbery Award Winning adventure novel. Students should continue reading a book of their choice this month. They did an excellent job on book groups! We will start another book group in February. We will be looking at non-fiction this month. December reading calendars are due on Wednesday, January 4th. Reading letters are due this week-Tuesday letters are due on Wednesday.

Writing
We will be working on feature articles. Students have read a variety of different feature articles and will be choosing topics and researching this week. Thanks to everyone who joined us to celebrate the realistic fiction stories!

Social Studies/Science
We finished the Native American unit and the posters were excellent! We will be starting a Floating and Sinking unit in Science sometime in the next few weeks.
