February 26, 2012

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great February break!

Math
In Math, we will start the Measurement unit. We will start with length. We are also working on problem solving each day.

Reading
Last week, we finished a great read-aloud called Petey, about a man with cerebral palsy. We will start a new Read Aloud this week, George Washington's Socks.This is a historical fiction story with bit of fantasy thrown in! It will go along with our Revolutionary War unit in Social Studies. Students will be reading books of their choice this week and should complete reading letters this week. Friday is  Dr. Seuss's birthday, Read Across America Day! Students should bring in a favorite book to share on Friday.

Writing
Students did a great job writing non-fiction! The feature articles were fantastic. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the writing celebration! Our next writing unit is historical fiction. We will be creating characters from the Revolutionary War time period and creating journals.

Science/Health
We finished up Floating and Sinking. We will start a unit on the digestive system over the next couple of weeks.

Social Studies
Students learned about colonial New York and will start a unit on the Revolutionary War this week.

We have started Junior Achievement! The students are really enjoying learning about natural resources and scarcity. They have been thinking about how to start their own business!

Math
This week, we will have a test on decimals on Tuesday. We will review on Monday. Our next unit is measurement.

Reading
This week, we will finish the book groups. Lesson 2 is due Monday and Lesson 3 will be due on Friday. There will be no book letters this week.

Writing
This week, we will finish publishing feature articles. We will have a writing celebration to share these articleson Friday at 2:30. Please join us if you can!

Social Studies
We are learning about colonial New York and the French and Indian War. We will start learning about the road to the Revolution this week.

Science
We are finishing the floating and sinking unit this week.

Math
This week, we are continuing the decimals unit. We will be finishing this up and having a test early next week. We will then start measurement.

Reading
We started a new read-aloud book called Petey by Ben Michaelson. We also started book groups. Students chose Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli, Year of the Dog by Grace Lin, and  The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger. Lesson 1 is due Monday February 6th, Lesson 2 is due Monday February 13th and Lesson 3 is due Friday, February 17th. We are also working in guided reading groups with the Saint Rose student working in our classroom.

Writing
We will be finishing our feature articles this week. We will have a writing celebration when we finish publishing-more info to come!

Science
We will be finishing up the floating and sinking unit this week. After the February break, we will do a short unit on the Digestive System.

Social Studies
This week, students will be learning about life in the colony of New York.
