January 19, 2014

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! We did a few activities about Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday and read a book written by his sister called, My Brother, Martin. The class enjoyed learning about what his childhood was like and what inspired him. Thank you for all of the quick responses to the conference times and for your flexibility. Please let me know if you have any questions.

This week...

Reading
Everyone seems to be enjoying the One School, One Book choice, Charlotte's Web! We have been having fun in class answering trivia questions and came up with meanings and synonyms for the vocabulary word "radiant". Make sure to check out the webpage and send in any pictures you have of your family enjoying the book together! In our class, we are still reading The Trumpet of the Swan and discussing the character of Louis. We are reading informational books as we research the solar system.

Writing
Students are continuing their work on informational writing. Students are researching a topic from the solar system and are practicing note taking from books and online sources. They have started writing chapters and are working to follow the practices of good information writers.

Math
Students took a test on the multiplication unit at the end of the week. Even though the test is over, students need to continue their daily practice of multiplication facts. We will start a unit on division on Tuesday.

Science/Social Studies
In Science, we are working on the electricity unit and we are learning about the solar system. In Social Studies, we are working on United States geography.
