March 9, 2014

Students have been getting low on glue sticks, pencils and colored pencils. If you could send some in, that would be great! Thanks!

This week...

Reading
We are finishing up our Beverly Cleary book clubs this week. The class did a great job with the book club assignments! Once they have finished their book, they can continue reading an independent book of their choice for reading in class and at home. We will be working on reading short passages (fiction and non-fiction) and answering multiple choice and short answer questions to prepare for the NYS ELA test.

Writing
We are finishing up our information books this week. The class did a great job on these and are very proud!! We will celebrate this accomplishment on Thursday of this week. Students will get a chance to read each other's work and give each other feedback.

Math
We finished up time last week and have started the fraction unit. Students will be bringing home their Unit 8 test to correct it this week. We are continuing daily multiplication drills. On Friday, I sent home a note to let you know which facts your child is working on. These should be practiced at home and a note like this will be sent home each Friday. There is a wide range of where kids are, from 2s up to 7s at this point. Practice at home is essential for them to master these facts and to move forward.

Science/Social Studies
In science, we are continuing to experiment with electricity. We looked at open and closed circuits last week and will look at series circuits (like Christmas lights) this week. In social studies, students are learning about economy-needs vs. wants; abundance vs. scarcity- in the United States and other parts of the world.
